All about permit practice tests and CDL driver's licence in Alaska

1. Meet Basic Requirements:

• Be at least 21 years old to drive interstate (across state lines), or 19 for intrastate driving (within Alaska).
• Have a valid Alaska driver's license.

2. Obtain a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP):

• Pass a knowledge exam specific to the type of CDL you’re seeking (Class A, B, or C).
• Pass a vision test (20/40 vision in each eye with or without correction).
• Provide proof of U.S. residency and identity (such as a birth certificate or passport).
• Hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test.

3. Pass the Skills Test:

• Pre-trip inspection: You’ll demonstrate that you know how to inspect your vehicle before driving.
• Basic vehicle control: Show your ability to maneuver the vehicle, including backing up and turning.
• On-road test: You’ll drive in real-world traffic to show your ability to safely operate the vehicle.

4. Medical Certification:

• You need to pass a DOT medical exam and provide a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (unless you're only driving intrastate and qualify for an exemption).

5. Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT):

• This applies to those applying for a CDL for the first time. You'll need to complete ELDT from a registered training provider before taking the skills test.

6. Submit Application:

Once you’ve passed all tests, submit your results to the Alaska DMV and pay the required fees to obtain your CDL.
