All about permit practice tests and CDL driver's licence in Arizona

1. Meet the Basic Requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old to apply for an intrastate CDL (driving only within Arizona). If you want to drive across state lines (interstate), you must be 21 years old.
  • You need to already hold a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Be sure to have proof of your U.S. citizenship or legal presence and Arizona residency.

2. Choose the Right CDL Class:

  • Class A: For driving combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, where the vehicle being towed weighs over 10,000 pounds.
  • Class B: For operating a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.
  • Class C: For smaller vehicles (less than 26,001 pounds) but designed to carry 16 or more passengers or hazardous materials.

3. Get Your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP):

  • Before you can get a CDL, you need to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).
  • To get your CLP, you must pass a written knowledge test for the CDL class you’re applying for. The test covers driving safety, regulations, and operation of commercial vehicles.
  • You must hold your CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test for the full CDL.

4. Pass the CDL Knowledge Tests:

Depending on the CDL class and endorsements (such as passenger, hazardous materials, or school bus endorsements), you’ll need to pass additional knowledge exams. Some common endorsements in Arizona include:

  • Tanker (N)
  • Hazardous Materials (H)
  • Passenger Vehicles (P)
  • Double/Triple Trailers (T)
  • School Bus (S)

You must also pass a vision test.

5. Complete a CDL Training Program (Optional but Highly Recommended):

  • While Arizona doesn’t require CDL training, it’s highly recommended to attend a CDL training school to learn the practical skills needed for operating commercial vehicles.
  • Some employers may require formal training as a condition for employment.

6. Pass the Skills Test:

After holding your CLP for at least 14 days, you can schedule your CDL skills test. The skills test includes:

  • Pre-trip vehicle inspection: Demonstrating your ability to inspect a commercial vehicle for safety.
  • Basic control skills: Performing maneuvers such as backing up, parking, and turning.
  • On-road driving test: Testing your ability to safely operate the vehicle in real traffic situations.

You’ll need to provide the appropriate type of vehicle for the class of CDL you’re applying for during the test.

7. Submit Your Documents and Pay Fees:

Once you’ve passed the necessary tests, bring the following to the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (MVD):

  • Your Commercial Learner’s Permit.
  • Proof of identity, residency, and legal presence.
  • Proof of medical certification (a Medical Examiner’s Certificate if required).

Pay the necessary fees for your CDL, which vary depending on the license class and endorsements.

8. Receive Your CDL:

After passing the skills test and submitting all the required documents, you’ll be issued your CDL and be ready to start driving commercially in Arizona!

Particulars for Arizona:

  • ELDT Requirements: Starting February 2022, Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is required for first-time CDL applicants, those upgrading their CDL class, or applying for certain endorsements. This training must be completed through a registered training provider.
  • Hazmat Endorsement: If you’re applying for the hazardous materials (H) endorsement, you’ll need to pass a TSA background check in addition to the knowledge test.

By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to obtaining your CDL in Arizona! Good luck!
