How old do you have to be to get a MOTO driver's licence in California?
In California, here’s a simple breakdown of how you can get your motorcycle license:
- Instruction Permit: You can get a motorcycle instruction permit at 15½ years old. You’ll need to complete a driver education course, pass a written test, and have parental consent if you’re under 18. The permit allows you to practice, but you can’t carry passengers, ride on the freeway, or ride at night.
- Motorcycle License (M1 or M2): At 16 years old, you can apply for a full motorcycle license. If you’re under 21, you’re required to complete a motorcycle training course approved by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). After passing the skills and written tests, you can get an M1 license, which lets you operate any two-wheeled motorcycle, or an M2 license, which is limited to motorized bicycles, scooters, or mopeds.
