All about permit practice tests and MOTO driver's licence in New Jersey

If you’re looking to get a motorcycle license in New Jersey, the process is pretty simple but has a few steps you’ll need to follow. Whether you’re completely new to riding or just upgrading your license, I’ll guide you through what you need to do to hit the road legally on two wheels.

Step 1: Meet the Basic Requirements

First things first, you need to meet some basic criteria:

• Age: You must be 17 years old to apply for a motorcycle permit. However, if you’re under 18, you’ll need parental consent.
• Driver’s License: You don't need a regular driver’s license to get a motorcycle license in New Jersey, but if you already have one, the process is slightly easier.

Step 2: Get a Motorcycle Permit

Before you can take the road test and get your full motorcycle license, you’ll need to practice riding with a motorcycle permit. Here’s how to get one:

• Take the Knowledge Test: You’ll have to pass a written motorcycle knowledge test at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). This test covers essential topics like road signs, safe riding practices, and state laws. Make sure to study the New Jersey Motorcycle Manual to prepare.
• Vision Test: You’ll also need to pass a basic vision test at the MVC office to ensure you can safely operate a motorcycle.
• Pay the Fee: The fee for the permit is $5, and it’s valid for 90 days. If you need more time to practice, you can renew it once for another 90 days.

Step 3: Practice with Your Permit

Once you have your motorcycle permit, you’ll need to practice riding before taking your road test. There are a few restrictions when you have just a permit:

• You cannot ride at night.
• You cannot carry passengers.
• You’re restricted to riding within New Jersey only.
• You’ll need to wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection at all times.

If you’re under 18, you’re required to complete 6 hours of training at a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course before you can take the road test.

Step 4: Take the Motorcycle Road Test

After practicing with your permit, the next step is to take the road test. There are two ways you can do this:

• Traditional Road Test: You can schedule a road test with the MVC. This test will assess your ability to safely operate a motorcycle in various scenarios, including stopping, turning, and maneuvering.
• MSF Course Waiver: If you complete an approved MSF Basic Rider Course, you can skip the road test. The course will cover both the written knowledge test and the practical riding portion. At the end of the course, you’ll receive a waiver for the road test, which means you can take your completion certificate to the MVC and get your license without having to schedule a separate exam.

Step 5: Get Your Motorcycle License

After passing the road test (or completing the MSF course), you’re ready to get your motorcycle license! Depending on your situation, this could be one of two things:

• If you already have a driver’s license, you’ll get a motorcycle endorsement added to it.
• If you don’t have a regular driver’s license, you’ll receive a standalone motorcycle license.

The final step is to pay the required fee for either the endorsement or the license.

Special Notes

• Basic Rider Course Requirement for Minors: If you’re under 18 years old, completing the MSF Basic Rider Course is mandatory. Not only does this prepare you for safe riding, but it also helps you bypass the road test.
• Out-of-State Riders: If you move to New Jersey and already have a motorcycle license from another state, you can transfer it without taking the tests again. Just bring your out-of-state license and the necessary documents to the MVC.
• Helmet Law: New Jersey requires all motorcycle riders, regardless of age or experience, to wear a DOT-approved helmet. Eye protection is also required unless your motorcycle has a windshield.

Getting your motorcycle license in New Jersey is a pretty smooth process as long as you follow the steps.
