While it’s not required, taking a Motorcycle Ohio Safety Course can be a great way to prepare for your final exam and become a more confident rider. Plus, if you successfully complete the course, you’ll skip the skills test portion when applying for your full license.

The Motorcycle Ohio Basic Rider Course (BRC) is designed for beginners and covers everything from basic control to advanced riding techniques. It includes classroom instruction and on-cycle training, and the cost is usually around $50, making it an affordable option.

Step 4: Pass the Motorcycle Skills Test

Once you’ve had some practice with your TIPIC or completed the safety course, you’re ready to take the motorcycle skills test. If you completed the BRC, you won’t need to take the skills test at the BMV. For everyone else, here’s how to proceed:

1. Schedule Your Test: You can schedule the skills test at your local BMV testing center or through one of the approved third-party testers in Ohio.
2. Prepare for the Test: The skills test evaluates your ability to handle a motorcycle in real-world situations. You’ll be tested on things like:
   • Starting and stopping smoothly.
   • Turning and cornering.
   • U-turns and tight maneuvers.
   • Swerving to avoid obstacles.
   • Stopping quickly and safely.
   Make sure you’re comfortable with all of these skills before scheduling the test. If you’ve been practicing regularly with your TIPIC, you should be in good shape.
3. Bring the Right Gear: On test day, make sure you bring:
   • Your TIPIC.
   • A DOT-approved helmet.
   • Proper protective gear, including eye protection, gloves, and sturdy footwear.
   • Your own motorcycle or a borrowed/rented one that meets Ohio’s safety standards (it must be street-legal and in good working condition).
4. Pass the Test: If you pass the skills test, you’ll receive your Class M motorcycle endorsement, which will be added to your existing driver’s license. If you don’t pass, don’t worry—you can retake the test, but you may have to wait a certain number of days before rescheduling.

Step 5: Get Your Full Motorcycle License

After passing the skills test (or completing the safety course), head back to the BMV to finalize your application. You’ll need to bring:

• Your TIPIC.
• Your skills test results (if you didn’t complete the safety course).
• Application fee (usually around $25-$30).

Once everything is processed, you’ll receive your new Ohio driver’s license with a Class M endorsement, allowing you to ride a motorcycle legally in the state.

Exceptions and Special Cases

• Minors (Under 18): If you’re under 18, you’ll need a parent or guardian’s signature to get your TIPIC. You’re also required to complete the Motorcycle Ohio Basic Rider Course to get your full license, and you must hold your TIPIC for at least 6 months before taking the skills test.
• Helmet Requirements: In Ohio, riders under 18 years old and those with a TIPIC must wear a helmet at all times. Once you have your full license and are over 18, you’re not legally required to wear a helmet, but it’s always a good idea for safety.
