EPA - the US Environmental Protection Agency - has put in place new standards to protect the environment by reducing harmful emissions of air pollutants from light- and medium-duty vehicles.
They will take effect in 2027. The aim is to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles – EV - which are considered less polluting. The Joe Biden administration has announced that it's about improving public health by reducing smog- and soot-generating pollution from vehicles, reducing climate pollution, and saving drivers money by reducing fuel and maintenance costs. These standards will be phased in over the 2027-2032 model years.
According to US officials, the new rules will lead to a 30 to 56 percent increase in electric car sales between 2030-2032. "Transportation is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States, which is why the new, unprecedentedly draconic standards reinforce the US' leadership in building a clean transportation system" - said EPA Administrator Michael Regan. EPA has calculated that the new rules will reduce pollution by 7 billion tons of air pollutants and improve air quality in congested communities. Statistics show that the overwhelming proportion of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States come from gasoline and diesel cars.
